Why Exercise and Diets Dont Work Today - Part 1 of 3
We are now nearing the end of January and all the gyms and health clubs have been working flat out to satisfy our “New Years Resolutions” of getting fitter, losing weight, looking toned etc. Yet with evermore elaborate health clubs popping up all over the place are we getting any closer to a fitter or healthier nation? Obesity is still on the rise and a diabetes epidemic is predicted for 2010.
The UK is now so worried about their health that the Health & Fitness market is worth billions in this country alone. However, no need to worry Gillian Mckeith is here with her Smoothies or Holland and Barrett with an all encompassing tablet to solve our problems, or the latest gym around the corner has an “all singing and dancing” machine that can melt the fat away in minutes. The problem is, as humans and naturally lazy, we are always on the lookout for a quick fix solution and I hate to be the one to break it too you but there isn’t one.
All this isn’t to say that you cannot be fit and healthy or lose weight and avoid diseases. The truth is most of us are lacking the knowledge and most gyms and health clubs are lacking it too. As a London personal trainer based in Hampstead I hear the same things over and over again from my clients “the gym has let me down”, I reply “it’s not the gym that has let you down but the people who work there”. Having attended gyms now for 20 years, I still see the same things happening today as 20 years ago. People spend too long on Cardio machines (often with an instructor just stood there watching) or people move from one machine to another with no real clue what they are doing. All of these exercises are ineffective, unnatural, often bad for your health and boring.
The real answer to health, fitness and well being lies in getting back to basics. Over the years the world has advanced at an incredible rate giving us more choice than ever before. The problem is our bodies are still relatively primitive in nature and are unable to keep up with the many choices available for exercise and nutrition today. Over exercise and eating unnatural foods will cause stress responses in the body and ultimately makes things worse. We all need to stop! Think about what we are doing and approach health and fitness in a simple more natural way. If you do get back to basics you will reach your optimum health, lose weight, reduce disease risks and feel altogether alive.
In part 2 I will tell you how and why to exercise for only 30 minutes 3 times a week and the basics of nutrition for optimum health.
